Hayfever
Hayfever
Hayfever is an allergic condition where a person’s airways become inflamed as a result of contact with pollen particles. The body identifies the particles as harmful and releases histamine, causing allergic symptoms. It is a very common condition which makes life more difficult for many people during the warmer months of the year, when the pollen count is naturally higher and the particles are more present in the air.
Hayfever symptoms are likely to be at their worst when the pollen count is high. This is defined as being when there are more than 50 grains of pollen present in every cubic metre of air. However, for some people, symptoms may be present all year round. Up to one in five people will experience the symptoms of hayfever at some point.
Everyone’s experience of hayfever will be different; symptoms can vary greatly in severity and may be different at different times of the year, dependent on weather conditions and pollen count. Some people are only allergic to certain types of pollen. The common symptoms of hayfever include:
- A runny or blocked nose
- Watery, itchy, irritated eyes
- Itching and irritation in the mouth, throat and nasal passages
People with more severe hayfever may also experience:
- A loss of taste and smell
- Facial pain and headaches as a result of blocked sinuses
- Sweats
If you also have asthma, hayfever can exacerbate the symptoms. For some people, hayfever can bring on the symptoms of asthma, causing wheezing and shortness of breath. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the condition can have a big impact on a person’s life, interfering with their ability to sleep, work, go to school and live their normal day to day life.
