Candida Albicans

Candida Albicans

Candida albicans is a form of yeast and a type of fungus which is naturally found in the human body, mostly on the skin, in the mouth, and in the intestines. In a healthy gut with a low pH level, the Candida population is kept low due to a combination of natural bodily secretions and beneficial gut bacteria. There are no known benefits to this bacteria, but in small amounts it is not usually harmful. The problems begin when levels of Candida begin to grow.

This can happen for various reasons. It can be caused by antibiotics, whether the person is taking them on prescription because of another infection, or as a result of consuming them in meat products or other drugs. Levels of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Bacteroides can be reduced by antibiotics whereas the Candida is untouched, meaning that it begins to multiply and replace the friendly bacteria in the gut. Candida thrives on sugars like fructose, glucose and sucrose, so a diet high in starchy or sugary foods can also result in an overgrowth of Candida.

When Candida levels in the gut are too high, the walls of the intestines can be gradually broken down, resulting in increased levels of toxins in the body. This can result in a host of problems, having adverse effects on both your mental and physical wellbeing. The symptoms may include headaches, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea or constipation, bloating, and infections in the mouth or genitals. You may experience a loss in mental well-being, with feelings of depression, lethargy and irritability. You may also have cravings for sugar and carbohydrates and want to eat more white bread, pasta and sweets, which will only worsen the symptoms. Many people also experience a general, indefinable sense of unwellness, with fatigue and loss of energy. As you can tell, Candida overgrowth can truly have an impact on all areas of your life.
